A memory from another time...
I read a touching story recently where one of the characters died. Now this character had never given any hint of his backstory up to this point, but then the protagonist found, tucked deep in the character's bloodied sleeve, an old worn photograph of a family long lost (dead), in a time before the protagonist had met him. One little sliver of a happy memory.
